Self-Care in Action: Practical Tools for Counselors Working with Sex Trafficking Survivors

Navigating the Emotional Terrain of Trauma Research: Reflexive Art Journaling as a Tool for Researcher Wellbeing and Integrity

Program Summary: While qualitative methods offer invaluable depth in understanding trauma-related experiences and phenomena, they also expose researchers to vicarious trauma, potentially impacting their wellbeing. This poster presentation explores the dual nature of trauma research, where vicarious trauma risks coexist with possibilities for vicarious posttraumatic growth. Given the necessity of epoché (bracketing) to mitigate bias and safeguard research integrity, this presentation introduces reflexive art journaling as a practical, creative tool for researchers at all levels to enhance self-awareness. process emotions, and foster resilience. By integrating art-based reflection, participants will learn to navigate the complexities of trauma research, promoting both their own wellbeing and the trustworthiness of their data, ultimately enriching the field and the lives of those they study. Attendees will leave with creative, practical tools to support their self-care, sustain emotional resilience, and remain grounded while engaging deeply with the complex realities of trauma research.

Social Determinants of Health with Sex Trafficking Survivors in the U.S.

Program Summary:A lack of access to social determinants of health (SDOH) negatively impacts well-being, especially when access may be intentionally restricted, as in sex trafficking. Sex trafficking remains misunderstood and a damaging form of human trafficking, still, counselors are uniquely positioned to prevent and/or disrupt the cycle of abuse by working with individuals who are sex-trafficked. To better understand the impact of SODH on sex trafficking survivors, we conducted a grounded theory study. This research presentation highlights our findings and offers recommendations for counseling practice and advocacy.

Self-Care Practices of Counselors Working with Sex Trafficking Survivors

Program Summary: Sex trafficking research continues to be in demand for many counselors. With an ethical obligation to practice self-care, counselors should be aware of how working with survivors of sex trafficking can impact their professional self-care strategies. This poster will highlight findings from a qualitative study on counselors working with sex trafficking survivors. Attendees will learn about current sex trafficking research, gain an awareness of counselors’ self-care practices when working with survivors of sex trafficking, and learn strategies from the empirical findings of the interviewed counselors for this study.

Trauma and Thriving: Counselors’ Guide to Survivors’ Experiences

Program Summary: Sex trafficking is a type of human trafficking with significant physical, behavioral, and mental health consequences. With exposure to at-risk populations, counselors can increase the identification and treatment of sex trafficking. This research education session introduces findings from a phenomenological study with sex trafficking survivors on the impact of sex trafficking, including post-traumatic growth. Understanding the multidimensional impact of sex trafficking and post-traumatic growth among survivors of sex trafficking is crucial to counselors. The presenters will also provide implications for clinical practice when working with sex trafficking survivors based on the empirical findings.

Uncovering Post Traumatic Growth Among Survivors of Sex Trafficking: What Counselors Need to Know?

Program Summary: Increasing sex trafficking prevalence globally causes severe concerns among the public and helping professionals alike. Among counselors and within counseling literature, much is known about the manifestations of mental illness symptoms and negative physical, psychological, and relational consequences. Among the consequences of traumatic experiences are positive growth transformations among survivors reflected by post trauma growth phenomenon (PTG; Calhoun & Tedeschi, 1999). Understanding PTG and factors that promote PTG among survivors of sex trafficking is crucial to counselors. This research poster illustrates how PTG manifests among survivors of sex trafficking as accounted by survivors and counselors.

Social determinants of health with sex trafficking survivors in the United States

Program Summary: Sex trafficking (ST) continues to be a significant challenge globally, and although statistics exist on prevalence, they are usually unreliable due to fear of personal harm and/or legal consequences (Interiano-Shiverdecker et al., 2021). A systematic review of the SDOH conducted by Perry and McEwing (2013) in Southeast Asia, found that severe physical and mental health ramifications exist for individuals being trafficked; however, similar research in the United States remains lacking. Therefore, our research team sought to better understand and meet the mental health needs of sex trafficked survivors by examining the impact of SDOH using Charmaz’s (2014) grounded theory methodology. This research poster presents our findings on the impact of SDOH on sex-trafficked survivors and provides recommendations for counselors who serve this marginalized community.

Sex Trafficking: What is it? Where do I start?

Program Summary: Sex trafficking is a chronic issue within Texas communities containing around 25% of all trafficked persons in the United States at any given time. With an aim to increase awareness of sex trafficking, presenters will share their own empirical research related to sex trafficking and offer insights into: (a) foundational knowledge of sex trafficking, (b) overview of the impact of sex trafficking on mental health, and (c) considerations for counselors working with clients who are at-risk, experiencing, or who have already left the life of sex trafficking. Case examples and practical resources for working with this population will be shared.

Content Analysis of Sex-trafficking Instruments

Program Summary: Sex trafficking is one of the most misunderstood and damaging forms of human exploitation. To ensure that counselors are appropriately identifying and intervening in sex-trafficking, accurate and accessible assessment tools are required. As such, the purpose of this study was to conduct a content analysis on instruments available for the screening of sex-trafficking in youth and young adults. Results of the study will be shared along with implications for research.

Sex-trafficking: Where’s the research?

Program Summary: Sex trafficking is increasingly garnering public and scholarly attention with 4.8 million victims of sex trafficking estimated in 2017 worldwide (The International Labour Organization, 2017). However, a literature review in ACA division journals shows only two published articles specifically addressing this topic. This roundtable invites counseling scholars to learn about sex-trafficking, discuss implications for research related to sex-trafficking, and converse about necessary changes that will expand current research on this topic.
